Art

FREE COMIC BOOK DAY 2014 at Magic Comics and Hobbies
Being an artist is tricky business. You will be judged harshly by people that have no idea how to be creative or the process that goes into creating art, you will be judged harshly by other artist who think that they know more than you, you will be judged harshly by yourself because you think that everyone is better than you and you will know suffering over things that most people in the world wouldn't even consider to be relative to life. But there will be a moment when someone looks at your work and it moves them in some way that you never expect. They love something you did, they will praise you for it and maybe even give you money so that they can take it with them and at that moment you will feel like everything you have done artistically was worth it. People will still judge you, you will sill judge yourself but at this point you have already done something that no one can ever take away from you you will have become an artist. You believed that you were an artist and you convinced someone else that you were an artist as well.

I have been drawing since I was a child and have always felt a calling towards it even when I'm not doing it. Sadly I do not have any of the art I did as a child but I believe that there are some ancient text books out there somewhere that have silly drawings of race cars and dinosaurs in them and someone out there is desperately trying to find out who the artist was. I honestly don't know what happened to all my drawings from my early life . . . they probably got thrown away. The earliest art that I still have would be from 8th grade around 1985 (it's not much) I'll eventually get around to posting that stuff. I've tried to scan or get a picture of everything that I have drawn in the last 10 years and anything that I have found from the past unfortunately I lost a good bit of the drawings that I did in college during hurricane Katrina and I have no record of those.

I consider myself a professional artist hopefully some day I'd like to make it into a full-time job. I currently do a lot of drawing for myself but most of my art is for sale if anyone is interested and I do commissioned art for people as well. Most of my larger artwork is available as prints if originals are not available. In the last few years I have taken my art and my original comic books to several comic book conventions in Louisiana  namely NOLA Comic-Con, Wizard World, CONtraflow and BayouCon. I have appeared at several FREE COMIC BOOK DAY events at BSI Comics in Metairie, Louisiana and I have also organized several Mini-Con's at Magic Comics and Hobbies in Slidell, LA called Magic Mini-Con as well as the FREE COMIC BOOK DAY and HALLOWEEN COMICFEST events also at Magic Comics and Hobbies.

My artwork is a fairly original style based in the realm of comic book and cartoons but I think it's a lot different than that of the mainstream. I have self-published the print and web-comic Strange City Heroes which ran for several years but has gone on hiatus for the time being. I do hope to get back to making comic books in the near future.

My hopes for the future are to get into the children's book illustration game, make more comic books and if I can ever get out of apartment living I'd like to do some large paintings.

My name is Kevin P. Johnson and I am an artist.
