Ella And The Boxing Butterfly

So I did a little show at 2nd & Charles in Covington, LA a few weeks ago and it was pretty terrible I was stuck hidden in a corner wedged between two other artist and almost nobody came up to my table because they couldn't see me or thought I was just part of the other peoples stuff, needless to say I didn't sell anything. The good thing was I got to see some family and friends and that made the day worthwhile. During this whole thing my niece Ella requested . . . demanded . . . a free drawing of a butterfly. So as I was drawing it I said "Should he have boxing gloves on?" she said "yes" as if it were even a question.

The last photo was not purposefully made to have that darkened oval around it, that happend because of the way the extra zoom lens I had on it wasn't focused correctly but I like the effect it caused.

Little Girl Commission

Young Girl was drawn with Sharpie Markers and Copic Markers on Strathmore 300 Series Bristol Board. Drawn in 2014.

This was done as a commission. The drawing was done with my light box technique (where I use a photograph to get the basic shapes of a persons face in line) but I really threw it out the light box right away and free-handed almost the entire drawing outside of the eyes.This was the commission that I did in replacement of the one of the Young Woman that you can see if you go back about a week on this blog. I think that this one came out okay I would have liked to do the hair differently . . . next time.

So I wanted to try making a drawing video with my phone but didn't know how well it would work. This was a quick test to see how it would go . . . my filming skills need work, ha, ha, ha! I turned off the sound because I was in a public place and the funny thing was as soon as I turned it off the language in the background got loud and really vulgar . . . not that I haven't done that myself but I try to keep my art as friendly to everyone as possible.

Young Woman Commission

Young Woman was drawn with Sharpie Markers, Sakura Pigma Sensei pens, Copic Pens and Copic Markers on Strathmore 300 Series Bristol Board. Drawn in 2014.

This was done as a commission. The drawing was done a little differently than normal I took an old graphic design technique where I blew up a photo and then put it on a light box. Once on the light box I quickly traced over the shapes of the face and basic shape of the body to ensure it would resemble the person it is supposed to be. I then threw out the photo drew in the hair and shirt and arms and little detail lines.

This drawing was rejected by the person who commissioned it and I have to do a new one but since a lot of people liked it I thought that I should post it here anyway since I think it looks good.

Zombie Dave And His Little Dog Too

Zombie Dave And His Little Dog Too was drawn with Sharpie Markers, Copic Pens and Copic Markers on Strathmore 300 Series Bristol Board. Drawn in 2014.

This was done as a commission based on a photograph. It was fun to do since I know the people that it's for and the girl who commissioned it loves it and wanted her husband and his dog to be zombies.

For some reason the scan washed out a lot of the light grey's I might have to rescan it.

Behind The Curtain: An Insider's View of Jay Leno's Tonight Show is a book cover that I designed at Pelican Publishing Company in 2014. This book came out today and I brought it to the library and took a few pictures of it on the shelf to give it a natural environment . . . placement near Love and Rockets was completely coincidental . . . yet awesome. I might post the entire dust jacket at some point but for now I thought that these two images wold be good. This book may be the best selling book we have had in some time at work you can order it from this link to Pelican Publishing Company. I do love to seeing my work in print it makes me feel like I did something important.

Elf

This elf was an updated idea of a drawing I did a while ago (without looking at the original drawing). Again I went with the weird blank eyes but to be fair the original elf drawing had blank eyes too.

Punk Rocker

Punk Rocker was drawn on Canson XL Series using various ink pens and Copic Markers. Drawn in 2014.

I wanted to do a quick sketch of a punk rocker with a turtle neck. I thought that it would be kind of funny to have a punk rock guy in a turtle neck sweater. I've been going through a phase of giving drawings blank eyes . . . it's weird but I kind of like it. Below is a few photographs of the steps in the process of the drawing.
